Join Swansea University for an array of voices, languages and poems as Modern Poetry in Translation launch their Spring issue as part of Swansea University Cultural Institute’s series of events celebrating International Women’s Day. Editor Clare Pollard will chair a discussion on translation, 21st century women’s poetry and the diverse language communities of Britain followed by a gala reading featuring poets from Swansea, Wales and across the UK, including multi-award winning poets Sabrina Mahfouz, Menna Elfyn and Liz Berry. An evening of words, performance and cutting-edge literature, not to be missed.

Geoff Brookes: In Knives We Trust

Come and join prolific local author and Swansea history expert Geoff Brookes for the launch of his first novel: In Knives We Trust.

Geoff Brookes spent his professional life as a teacher in Leicester and in two Swansea Comprehensive schools. His writing career began with pieces in The Independent and he was soon writing regularly for The Times Education Supplement. He is a featured writer for Welsh Country Magazine and the author of a number of books about Swansea’s history.

An atmospheric murder mystery set in Victorian Swansea in 1880,it evokes a convincing portrayal of life in a nineteenth century Welsh town. A plot which uses authentic locations and voices.

The first in a series featuring Inspector Rumsey Bucke. Inspector Rumsey Bucke, a still-grieving widower, must find Daniel Guy who has tried and failed to murder his own wife. He tracks him steadily through the murky streets of Swansea’s poorest communities, with little help from a corrupt and incompetent police force.

Two fatal stabbings, which may or may not be connected, put Bucke’s position under threat from a scheming superior. However, he finds the will and the support to change his life from an unlikely source, the wife of a prime murder suspect. As he finally confronts his own sorrow, he discovers that terrible secrets lurk beneath the surface of the ordinary lives around him.

No one can ever escape from the secret burdens they carry with them. But there are unknown figures lurking in the shadows and Bucke is drawn into the dangerous world of international politics, with assassins playing out a clandestine war on the streets of the town, ready to kill the innocent to protect themselves. As he desperately runs out of time to prevent another murder, Bucke has to find the answers which have eluded him.

Who is the murderer? Is it Daniel Guy? Is it someone else? Just how many murderers are there? There is a bigger question for him too. If, as they say, justice is blind, are there occasions when the law should be blind too?

The history of the south Wales city of Swansea stretches back to the establishment of a Viking trading post at the mouth of the River Tawe, and the settlement was granted a charter following the Norman Conquest. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the town grew rapidly through the development of coal mining and copper smelting in the area and is today the second largest city in Wales.

In this book local author Lisa Tippings reveals the hidden history of Swansea, from its medieval and industrial past to the present day. From stories of intrigue and murder, shipwrecks off the coast, the Victorian asylum, the many places of worship and drinking establishments, to its literary and artistic connections, not least Dylan Thomas, its role in the women’s suffrage movement and its industrial heritage in which pottery played an important role alongside copper production, Swansea has a rich and varied past.

Secret Swansea explores the lesser-known episodes and characters in the history of the city through the centuries. With tales of remarkable people and unusual events and fully illustrated throughout, it will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this city in south Wales.

Edward Thomas & Wales: Jeff Towns in conversation with Andrew Green

Join us this February for the launch of Jeff Towns’ latest foray into Welsh literary heritage, Edward Thomas & Wales.

The evening includes a Q&A session led by Andrew Green (Wales in 100 Objects) and a book signing.
